“I wanted to say a hearty “Thanks” for the great products, service, and advice you & your staff have given me over the past 18 months. Thought I’d send along some photos of the finished product.”

“This is a ’97 ES-10 with 18 eight-volt Trojans with remote fillers from Flow-Rite Controls. I used a Curtis controller, which is fan-cooled inside an aluminum plenum underneath your control box. The truck still has airbags, ABS and speedo/odometer.

It hits 70mph with relative ease on the highway and is a pleasure to drive with your power steering and brake setups. We haven’t pushed the miles-between-charge yet, but I’ve gone 16 miles with lots of traffic lights, with good battery power still left.

I put clear Lexan boxes around the batteries to keep fingers out and keep the batteries clean. It seems to insulate them reasonably well for our climate in FL.”

Some people go fishing or play golf when they retire. I decided to design and build my own street-legal electric sports car – from the ground up. And oh what fun it was!

1998 Suzuki Swift Hatchback Conversion

The Swift conversion utilized a High Performance Golf Carts AC31 3-phase motor controlled by a Curtis AC controller. It was originally powered by a 96 volt bank of 114 amp-hour Discover lead acid batteries before being replaced with Thunder Sky 90 amp-hour lithium ion pack. The lead acid pack weighed 256 Kg and the lithium pack weighed 102.4 Kg, a difference of 153.6 Kg.

Suzuki Swift performance comparison of Lead Acid and Lithium Batteries:

From 0 to 60 Km/h, the lithium pack accelerated up to speed in less than one second sooner than the lead acid every time. The graphs show the current draw from the lithium batteries start off much lower before they stabilized at the lead acid levels. The lithium cells consumed approximately 4 amp-hours less each run, mostly due to the higher operating voltage and 60% less weight. Below the graph 50km/h maintained shows the amps used to travel at 50 Km/hr and averaged at 54.56 and 40.13 amps for the lead acid and lithium packs respectively. Even though the lead acid battery bank had a rated capacity of 114Ah, under regular driving conditions the pack only delivered between 25 to 30 usable amp-hours, only 26% of the rated value. At 55 Km/h the lead acid pack used 55.6 amps which suggested that the swift could run for approximately 54 hours giving a range of 29.7 Km. With the lithium pack the capacity rating of 90 Ah is very close to the available capacity and was used for the range calculations. Traveling at 50 Km/h the swift was using approximately 40 amps which indicated a possible range of 112.5 Km. This is 3.8 times the lead acid pack mostly due to the increased power density of the lithium ion cells, but also due to the high efficiency and light weight construction of the leading edge battery technology. The lithium pack consumed less current at that speed due to the higher operating voltage which decreases the amount of current necessary to provide the same amount of power.

Gauges include amp meter and EV Pro fuel gauge. Up to 200 amps of regen braking single speed drive with 85 km/hr top speed. Range of 40 – 60 km (range and speed would significantly increase with standard transmission). Power brakes, electric heat / defrost, retains back seat.

A bolt-in system utilizing AC drive and Lithium batteries for conversion of existing 2000-2009 fleet Rangers to pure electric power. Converting a Ford Ranger from gas to electric reduces CO2 emissions from 16.2 tonnes CO2/40,000 km to zero. Designed to meet the daily needs of a typical fleet truck with a range of 80-120 km per charge. Converting a Ranger is a smart way to recycle existing gas trucks to zero emission fleet vehicles.

Ice Resurfacer Conversion

Canadian Electric Vehicles has developed a bolt-in system utilizing AC drive and Lithium batteries for conversion of an existing gas or propane ice resurfacer to pure electric power. Converting an ice resurfacer to electric is a smart and economical way to recycle existing ice resurfacers to zero emission vehicles.

Conversion Kit for Models 520 / 525 / 526:

  • 50 hp AC Drive System
  • 28 kW of Lithium Batteries
  • Onboard 5 kW Charger
  • Recharge time after single cleaning: 1hr from 220 V/30 A
  • Capable of 6 cleanings before a recharge is needed but recommended to be charged after each use
  • J1172 charge inlet – plugs into standard EV charging station
  • 30 A 12 V supply to run accessories
  • Very little weight change over propane/gas powered resurfacer
  • Drives and performs the same as a propane/gas powered resurfacer. The converted resurfacer has regenerative braking which slows the resurfacer down when the throttle is released just like the compression braking of the original engine.
  • Very low maintenance
